Bougainvillea Care in Dubai: A Simple Guide

Bougainvillea (Bougainvillea glabra) is a vigorous outdoor plant valued for its colourful papery bracts and small white flowers. Dubai's bright, warm conditions can suit it well when the plant receives strong sunlight and fast-draining soil.

Sunlight and placement

Grow bougainvillea outdoors in full sun for the strongest growth and flowering. Choose an open location with good airflow, such as a sunny garden, patio or terrace. If the plant is trained against a wall or trellis, leave enough space for air to move around the foliage.

Watering in Dubai

Water newly planted or recently repotted bougainvillea regularly while it establishes. For an established plant, water deeply and then let the upper soil begin to dry before watering again. Check pots more often during very hot or windy weather, but do not keep the root zone constantly wet. Reduce watering when growth slows in cooler months.

Soil and drainage

Use a well-draining mix and a container with unobstructed drainage holes. Poor drainage can damage the roots, so empty any saucer or decorative outer pot after watering. Avoid moving a healthy plant into an oversized pot; bougainvillea generally performs well when its roots are not surrounded by a large volume of wet soil.

Feeding and flowering

Feed during active growth with a balanced fertiliser, following the label rate. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of colourful bracts. Strong sunlight, sensible watering and good drainage are more important than frequent feeding.

Pruning and support

Use a trellis or other sturdy support if you want the plant to climb. Light trimming during active growth can keep it tidy, while major shaping is best done after a flowering flush. Bougainvillea stems can be thorny, so wear sturdy gloves and long sleeves when tying or pruning them.

Common problems

Few bracts are often linked to insufficient sunlight, excessive feeding or consistently wet soil. Sudden leaf drop can follow a sharp change in watering or growing conditions. Inspect stems and leaf undersides for aphids, mealybugs, scale and whiteflies, and follow the label of any treatment used on ornamental plants.
