Cast Iron Plant (Aspidistra elatior) has upright, glossy green leaves and a slow growth habit. It is a useful choice for indoor corners that receive less light, while still needing sensible watering and drainage.
Light in a Dubai home
Choose filtered or low indirect light. Keep leaves out of harsh direct sun through glass, which can scorch them. Low-light tolerance does not mean the plant can grow in a windowless room without another light source.
When to water
Check below the surface and water when the upper soil has dried. Let water drain completely and empty the outer pot or saucer. Soil usually dries more slowly in a shaded room, so avoid copying the watering schedule of a plant beside a bright window.
Potting and feeding
Use a draining houseplant mix and a pot with holes in the base. Its slow growth means frequent repotting is rarely necessary. Feed lightly during active growth according to a houseplant fertiliser label.
Leaf care
Wipe leaves gently with a damp cloth to remove dust. Cut a damaged leaf at its base rather than tearing it from the clump. Keep it away from direct AC airflow and inspect new growth as it emerges.
Troubleshooting
Brown patches can follow sun exposure; consistently wet soil can contribute to yellowing. Check for scale or mites on affected foliage. Slow growth alone is normal for this plant and does not call for extra water or repeated feeding.
