Chinese Orange (Citrus mitis), also known as calamondin, is a small citrus tree valued for fragrant flowers and orange fruit. A sunny patio and a well-drained container can provide a practical growing position.
Sunlight and placement
Give the tree a sunny outdoor location with good airflow. Move a plant that has been kept in shade into stronger sun gradually. Position the pot where you can inspect leaves and reach the soil easily.
Watering a container citrus
Water thoroughly when the upper potting mix starts to dry, then let excess water drain. Avoid letting the root ball become completely dry or constantly saturated. Hot days and a developing canopy can increase water demand; check the soil rather than using a fixed weekly schedule.
Soil and nutrition
Choose a fertile, free-draining container mix and a pot with drainage holes. Use a citrus fertiliser with micronutrients at the label rate during active growth. Yellowing can have several causes, so check drainage and watering before increasing the dose.
Pruning and fruit expectations
Remove dead or crossing twigs with clean tools and keep shaping modest. Flowers and fruit depend on maturity and growing conditions, so do not expect an immediate harvest after planting. Calamondin fruit is typically sour rather than a substitute for sweet eating oranges.
Routine checks
Inspect tender shoots and leaf undersides for sap-feeding pests and distorted growth. Sudden leaf or fruit drop can accompany changes in watering or environment. Keep irrigation outlets clear and check that a decorative outer pot is not trapping water.
