Croton Goldust (Codiaeum variegatum) brings green and golden-yellow foliage to outdoor planting. Steady light, warmth and watering help it retain its decorative leaves.
Light and acclimatisation
Choose a bright position suited to the plant's current exposure. Good light supports leaf colour, but move a shaded nursery plant into stronger outdoor sun gradually. Watch for bleaching or scorch during intense summer exposure and adjust placement if necessary.
Watering in Dubai
Water when the top layer of soil begins to dry, keeping the root zone reasonably moist without saturating it. Check pots more frequently during hot wind. Empty trapped water from saucers and outer pots.
Soil and feeding
Use fertile, freely draining soil or container mix. Apply a balanced fertiliser at its labelled rate during active growth. Avoid repeated strong doses, especially when the plant is dry or has recently been moved.
Stable conditions and tidying
Crotons can drop leaves after abrupt environmental changes. Let a newly positioned plant settle while monitoring moisture. Remove dead leaves and use light pruning to manage shape. Wear gloves when cutting stems and wash tools afterwards.
Checking leaf problems
Inspect undersides and stems for mites, scale and mealybugs. Loss of colour may reflect inadequate light; yellowing or leaf drop can also follow watering problems. Review the whole growing environment before choosing a treatment.
