Elephant Foot Tree (Beaucarnea recurvata), often called ponytail palm, has a swollen trunk base and arching, strap-like leaves. It is a succulent rather than a true palm, so its watering needs differ from many leafy tropical plants.
Light and placement
Provide a bright position. Indoors, a well-lit window can suit it; outdoors, introduce it gradually to its new exposure. Protect a recently moved plant from abrupt changes in intense sun and temperature.
Watering the succulent base
Water thoroughly, then let the potting mix dry between waterings. The swollen base stores water, so frequent small top-ups can leave roots too wet. Check below the surface and reduce watering when growth slows.
Soil and pot
Use a cactus or succulent mix that drains quickly and a pot with clear drainage holes. Keep the swollen base above the soil rather than burying it. Choose a stable container without excessive spare volume around the roots.
Feeding and leaf care
Feed lightly during active growth at the label rate. Its slow growth is normal. Remove dry foliage carefully, and avoid cutting healthy leaf tips merely to reshape the fountain of leaves.
Troubleshooting
A soft base or persistently wet soil requires prompt attention to drainage and watering. Dry brown tips can have several causes, including moisture stress and environmental changes. Inspect the root zone before responding with more water.
