Flame Tree (Delonix regia), also called royal poinciana, is valued for feathery foliage and a broad canopy. It needs a landscape position planned around its mature spread.
Selecting a site
Give the tree full sun and substantial open space. Its spreading roots and canopy make proximity to paving, small courtyards and buildings an important consideration. Assess the mature tree footprint before planting.
Establishment watering
Water regularly while the young tree establishes, checking the original root ball as well as nearby soil. Adjust irrigation as roots spread. Free drainage matters; a wet planting hole can cause problems even when the surface looks dry.
Soil and growth
Use a well-drained site and preserve the original planting depth. Keep mulch clear of the trunk. Avoid assuming vigorous new growth requires frequent strong fertiliser applications.
Training and monitoring
Train young branches carefully to develop a sound structure. Use a qualified arborist for major cuts or work beyond ground-level reach. Flowering depends on maturity and growing conditions, while some seasonal leaf shedding is normal. Check irrigation and branch condition if decline occurs outside the usual seasonal pattern.
