Golden Barrel Cactus is a rounded cactus with pronounced ribs and golden spines. Its slow growth and need for dry, draining soil make its care different from leafy garden plants.
Light and acclimatisation
Choose a bright, sunny position, introducing a shaded nursery plant gradually to stronger sun. Watch for pale or scorched patches after a move, especially during intense summer exposure.
Watering a cactus
Water thoroughly only after the mix has dried, then let excess water escape. Avoid small daily top-ups. During cooler or slower growth periods, check less often and water less frequently. Soil moisture should guide the timing.
Soil and container
Use a cactus mix with mineral material that encourages fast drainage. Keep drainage holes clear and the plant at its existing depth. A decorative outer pot should never hold standing water around the roots.
Handling and monitoring
Use suitable cactus-handling equipment to avoid the spines. Do not prune the crown to change its shape. A soft, discoloured base calls for a drainage and root check; slow growth alone is normal. Feed sparingly during active growth at the cactus fertiliser label rate.
